Correspondence, journals, notes, and memoranda relating to Poinsett's activities as special agent of the U.S. to Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Río de la Plata (Viceroyalty), 1810-1814; and as president of the South Carolina Board of Public Works, 1819-1821. Includes a memoranda book on the construction of the Columbia Canal, Saluda Canal, and other public works projects in South Carolina; a discourse (1841) by Poinsett on the National Institute for the Promotion of Science; copies of three letters from John Charles Frémont; and a few letters written during the time Poinsett was U.S. minister to Mexico (1825-1830), leader in the Union Party (S.C.), and U.S. secretary of war (1837-1841).
